Hearing Losses of Fetal Alcohol Consumption

Fetal alcohol syndrome, also known as fetal alcohol abuse syndrome, is a collection of physical anomalies and nervous system abnormalities associated with maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

The primary auditory concern with children diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome appears to be conductive hearing loss secondary to recurrent otitis media.

The amount of ethanol consumed, the timing of the drinking, the possible role of associated nutritional deficiency, and other aspects of the clinical situation required to produce the fetal alcohol syndrome still not fully understood.

However there was a report that of clinically significant levels of hearing loss in fetal alcohol syndrome children, which might reflect a vulnerability toward otitis media a central hearing loss.

Actually fetal alcohol syndrome children were found to be at high risk for a variety of hearing disorders like delay in maturation of the auditory system, congenital sensory hearing loss, conductive hearing loss secondary to recurrent otitis media, and central hearing disorders.

Hearing loss is especially common in fetal alcohol syndrome and it is evidence of neuro developmental disorder.

Healing problems can be subdivided into three main types: conductive, sensorineural and central hearing loss.

Adequate hearing is necessary for proper speech, language and intellectual development.
